Learning Linux -Make your own motion detecting security camera with "motion"
I've covered motion before, but it's a powerful and complex piece of software so configuring it can be confusing at first. Plus there are many different ways to use it so I'm happy to link any tutorials I find.
Motion is simply software motion detection that can turn any Linux supported webcam into a sophisticated security system. Configuring it properly will lead to optimal results with better detection and fewer false positives.
This article is geared toward Ubuntu but it will be similar for any Linux without training wheels too.

Interesting! Does the software work for those folks who use old Android phones as their security cams?
ReplyDeleteMichael Ireland With the right app, it should. motion supports IP cameras and I'm pretty sure there are Android security camera apps that work as standards based IP cams. Just match up two.
ReplyDeleteIn fact I vaguely recall doing just that back with my Nexus One...
Very cool. I could see myself fiddling with this at some point.
ReplyDeleteMichael Ireland Yeah, I use motion with a cheap webcam(s) to look in on the house when we're away. Works pretty good. I use my VPN to get into the network so I don't have any holes in my firewall, and then I use tinyCam Monitor Pro to connect to motion from my phone. With this combo I can look in on the house live from anywhere in the world while keeping my home LAN secure.
ReplyDeleteI have thought about this before, just as you describe. I just wish there was more time in the day to pursue stuff like this. Always too busy with other priorities :/
ReplyDeleteMichael Ireland I hear ya. In my case I already had my HTPC running all the time (with Linux) and I had a few webcams kicking around so I put the two together for a "free" home monitoring system.
